THE FRENCH came first. They intended to found Equatorial France on the large island that the Tupynamba Indians called Upaon-Açu. Three years later, in 1615, they were thrown out by the Portuguese. Later, the Dutch gave it a try, also lasting only three years. São Luís is the only non-Lusitanian city, but now it is the most Portuguese of all the Brazilians capitals. The wealthy merchants of the Gran-Pará and Maranhão Trading Company left a rich architectural and cultural heritage, building the largest and most homogeneous colonial architectural complex in Latin America, an Historical Heritage for all Humanity.
